Need some Z's? Meet Valerian-(valeriana Officinalis)

Originating from the Latin valere, "to be well". Valerian is known as a sleep remedy and can be combined with passionflower or skullcap to create a safe and effective herbal blend. Results from multiple studies indicate that valerian — a tall, flowering grassland plant — may reduce the amount of time it takes to fall asleep and help you sleep better. Of the many valerian species, only the carefully processed roots of the Valeriana officinalis have been widely studied. Dosages vary, please do your research. Valerian is also used as a pain reliever and muscle relaxer. Some have used valerian as a antidote to help with menstrual cramps, adding it with some motherwort (see previous post on motherwort)


Harvesting valerian: Dig the roots in the spring or fall, but wait until the fall of the second year after planting for your first harvest. You will get a good size root. After washing, while the root is still fresh (much easier to cut up) chop it up in small pieces and dry on screens or in an open well ventilated area. The dried roots maintain their effect for awhile. From there you can tincture your medicine. I prefer this as a tincture but you can use the dried root in a tea.


Talk to your naturopath doctor. If you're thinking of taking valerian, check with your doctor to make sure it won't interact with other medications or supplements you're taking and that it's safe to take with any health or medical conditions you have.

Contraindications-avoid using valerian with barbiturates or benzodiazepines, such as Valium or Xanax. DO YOUR RESEARCH AND IF CONCERNS TALK WITH YOUR DOCTOR.
